Hard drive failure on laptop?

I have a pretty old Compaq Armada, about 8 years old, and its been running EXTREMELY slow lately and every time i boot it up, it says hard drive detects imminent failure, but its been saying that for the last year or so, so whats up with it, and if i do have to replace the hard drive, how much is it, or should I just get a new laptop all together?
