Why are some nations (USA, UK etc) hated more than other equivalent nations who share the same ideals?

Nations such as the USA and UK are far more hated by the world and seen as world controlling aggressors, yet nations such as Germany, France etc who share the same ideals and western-power based believes, get away with it. I know the Brits and Yanks have more troops deployed etc and are more powerful than France etc in terms of economics and global "clout" if you will but still, i feel (as a Canadian) that the "blame" (although that is clearly the wrong term, as it implies they are in the wrong) is placed on some countries rather than others that just keep their heads down. I travel a lot for work (Shell Oil), and believe me, this is the case.
