Why do people disrespect Mormons so much?

Why are people bashing our religion? We dress well to show respect, the majority of us were raised to be caring people, the church teaches us not to make fun of others - and most of us carry that out. On the other hand, I see my Mormon clmates being made fun of at school, I heard about missionaries being shot, even on Youtube there are bashful comments about us. Why do people make mean jokes about us and hate us so much?
